David Ombler

Age: 71

Sex: male

Date: 30 May 1914

Place: West Parade, Hull

David Ombler was beaten at his shop with a poker and tongs.

He was found lying on his back in his shop with head injuries and was taken to the infirmary but died.

His killer stole a dark grey overcoat, a gold albert, an old silver lever hunter watch, a very old silver coloured dial watch with steel hands and a purse.

His skull had been fractured from the forehead to the back of his head.

The assault took place in broad daylight at his shop where he was a grocer. There was evidence that a struggle had taken place.

He had attended a wholesale market earlier that morning and was found soon after his return by his neighbour.

A servant girl employed by a neighbour said that she saw a strange looking man loitering in the street during the early morning.

The police later offered a £50 reward for the killers capture. The police said that they thought the killer was in hiding and were certain that he had not tried to sell the stolen items. They said that in addition to a thorough search of the city the county was being scoured by officers on cycles.

He had lived alone since the death of his wife.
