Human Remains

Age: 30

Sex: male

Date: 3 Mar 2002

Place: Halse Lane, Winsford, Somerset

The remains of an Asian or black man in his 20s were found in plastic bag in Halse Lane near Winsford Hill on Exmoor, Somerset. He had a gold pendant on him with a Koranic verse on it.

Police said that there was evidence to indicate that he had suffered a violent assault before he died. It was thought that he had died sometime between 1999 and 2000. However, it was further stated that it was thought that his body could have been kept somewhere else after he died and then later buried on the moor some time after May 2001.

The man's remains had been wrapped up in plastic bags and bedding. Underwear was also found along with his remains.

DNA examination failed to identify him and a clay head facial reconstruction was made in May 2002 to help try and identify him.

His body was found by a park ranger.

He was thought to have been aged between 25 and 35 and to have originated in North Africa or Asia. It was thought that he had only been in the UK for a couple of years and that he had spent time around the south of England.

The verses on the gold pendant were from verse 255 of the Koran.
