Mabel Harper

Age: 53

Sex: female

Date: 13 Aug 1943

Place: Western Avenue, Cardiff

Mabel Gwendoline Harper was found gagged and stripped on the grass verge of Western Avenue in Cardiff on the morning of 13 August 1943.

She was found with her clothing torn to shreds and with her ankles tied together with her stockings.

She also had severe facial injuries.

She had lived in Aubrey Avenue, Victoria Park in Cardiff.

She had been out visiting friends about a mile away from where she was found on 12 August 1943 and it was thought that she was attacked whilst walking home after having missed the last bus.

It was said that the route that she would have walked home would have been pitch black in the black-out and that the main road that she had walked along was bordered by high trees.

Her brown fibre attache case and black handbag were missing.

The police said that soldiers on late pass on the night were being questioned.

It was thought that a man had witnessed her murder and the police called for a man that was seen standing on the kerb in Western Avenue opposite the grass verge where Mabel Harper was murdered at about the same time to come forward.

Mabel Harper had three children, two of whom were in the forces. She was a widow.
