Charles Jones was found injured in Parkfield Road in Rudheath, where he lived, and taken to hospital but died two weeks after being discharged after he developed a blood clot on the brain from the injury.
He was found just after midnight in the road with serious head injuries.
He had been walking home from the RAF Wings Club in Northwich.
The police were said to have followed up 700 leads during their investigation, but to have drawn a blank.
