Jody Burns was killed in a street fight involving up to 60 people at a taxi rank on the High Street in the Old Town in Runcorn.
He had been out in the High Street on 15 June 2001 when he got involved in a string of fights between 12.30am and 1.30am.
Jody Burns was taken to Whiston Hospital after being injured but died later that day. He had suffered from serious head injuries.
He was seen on CCTV trying to break up a fight outside the Bank Chambers pub shortly before but when the fighting spread to the taxi rank he was injured.
It was said that the disturbance in general had been going on for about 45 minutes before the police arrived.
The police interviewed 260 witnesses, but were unable to identify who was responsible for killing him.
Five men were later charged with violent disorder.
