Martin Simpson was found with head injuries in Albion Street, Leicester after a night out on 23 November 2003 at about 2.30am.

He was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary but was found to be dead on arrival. His body was found by a taxi driver lying in the middle of the street.

Martin Simpson, a grandfather, was described as having been a well-liked character in Leicester's bars and betting shops. 

He had earlier on been to the Yates wine bar on Belvoir Street, the Last Plantaganet in Granby Street and the High Cross pub on the High Street during the afternoon of 22 November 2003 as well as other places.

It was said that when he had left the High Cross pub he had been going off to see his mother, who was unwell.

His post-mortem stated that he had a fractured skull and that he had bruising to both eyes and the police said that they beleived that he had been assaulted.

The investigation into his murder was called Operation Dice.

The police later released CCTV footage of a man walking along New Walk, who they had also seen in other CCTV footage close to where Martin Simpson was found, and said that they thought that he might have had information that could help their investigation. Police said that they thought that the man in the CCTV footage might have been a student as he was walking off towards the university area.

A number of people were arrested in connection with his murder but they were all later released without charge.
