Arthur Lawes

Age: 27

Sex: male

Date: 16 Aug 1930

Place: Garratt Lane, Tooting

Arthur Lawes was knocked down by a car in Garratt Lane, Tooting on the night of Friday 16 August 1930 and died the following day at St James's Hospital in Balham.

He had been knocked down and run over by a stolen car in Garratt Lane at the junction with Fountain Road after which the driver failed to stop and drove off.

The car that ran him over was later found abandoned.

Arthur Lawes had been a police-constable and had been attempting to stop the car because it did not have any lights on.

He had stepped out, holding up his hand for the car to stop, but the car was driven straight at him and hurled him 15 yards after which the car passed over him as he lay on the ground.

Arthur Lawes was taken to St James's Hospital in Balham where he was found to have a fractured skull and died the following day. It was said that he had been unable to answer any questions.

It was thought that there had been three men in the car at the time and the police said that they were searching for them. It was said that the flying squad had been notified of the incident by wireless shortly after and had searched until long after day-break for the men. However, it was noted that the search for the three men had been made more difficult by the incomplete descriptions of the men.

The car was found abandoned nearby in Blackshaw Road, about a quarter of a mile away, the occupants having fled.

The car had been stolen from a garage in Garratt Lane. The police later took possession of the car which they examined and also examined the garage where it had been taken from, and were said to have found definite finger print impressions.

His inquest, which concluded on Thursday 9 October 1930 returned a verdict of manslaughter against some person unknown.
