Susan Westwell was murdered in a robbery at her home at 24 Hyndburn Road, Accrington.
Her body was found behind the door of her cottage in the morning with her head beaten in. She had been found by cotton mill girls to whom she had usually supplied hot water for their meals. They had gone to her house just before 6am to leave their breakfast tins but were puzzled to find the door locked and the lights burning. They then told a mill engineman who then broke in at the back and then found her lying behind the door with her head battered and her hair matted with blood.
