Atek Hussain

Age: 32

Sex: male

Date: 18 Sep 1994

Place: Burnels Avenue, Upton Park, East London

Atek Hussain was stabbed to death outside his home in Burnels Avenue, Upton Park.

He ran a family owned restaurant called the Warlingham Tandoori at The Green in Warlingham, Surrey, and had been working there shortly before he was murdered.

After finishing work, he dropped of some employees in Poplar in his blue Vauxhall Cavalier and then drove home to Burnels Avenue, arriving at 2.35am, where he was attacked as he got out of his car and stabbed in the heart.

After the attack, he managed to get to his door and ring the doorbell and then go off to a phone box to call for an ambulance. His family rushed out after hearing a noise to find him dying and said that he told them before he died that his attacker was Asian.

A witness said that they saw at least two Asian men running off at the time towards Hameway.

The police said that they thought that robbery might have been the motive for his attack as it was known that he was responsible for the restaurant’s takings and that he would have had about £1,000 on him at the time. However, the cash was not taken, but it was thought that he had had a bag of laundry with him at the time, given to him by one of his workers, and that that was taken instead as it was never recovered.

The police said that they later found a denim jacket nearby in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene in Norman Road which they thought might have been linked to the murder.

Shortly after his murder, the police arrested five people in connection with his murder, but no one was charged.

Atek Hussain had a wife and three children.
