A 59-year-old friend of his, who was from Trinidad and had lived in Eagle House on the Sinclair Estate, was tried for his murder but acquitted.

It was claimed that he had stabbed him in a row over a badly-cooked meal of undercooked pork and rice on 29 July 1987.

The 59-year-old friend was later arrested after it was heard that he had confessed to a chemist, saying, 'I stuck a knife in him'. It was noted that Hubert Bryan and his 59-year-old friend had had a volatile friendship and that they had often argued. The 59-year-old friend had described Hubert Bryan as 'cantankerous, volatile, and a schizo'.

The 59-year-old friend admitted that there had been a scuffle and that Hubert Bryan had come at him with a knife and cut him on the neck. but said that he had not retaliated and had just wrestled the knife from Hubert Bryan's hand.

However, he said that he had left Hubert Bryan alive and well and standing in the hallway when he had left and suggested that someone else must have entered his flat sometime after and killed him.
