John Lennon was found dead in St Anthonys Road, Forest Gate, East London in the early hours of 20 February 1988.

His pockets were turned out and he had been robbed.

He had a small bruise to his neck and his post mortem stated that his cause of death was massive bleeding into his brain from a torn neck artery.

He was described as an Irish drunk and had been a paint sprayer. He was of no fixed address but had lived in the Plumstead and North Woolwich areas.

He had spent his last night with his girlfriend drinking in the Upton Manor public house in Plashet Road, Plaistow and it was heard that she was the last person other than his murderer or murderers to see him alive.

A man was tried for his murder but acquitted. He said that he had been at home asleep in front of his television at the time. He was arrested five months after John Lennon was found dead.

He said that at the time his aunt from Jamaica had been over to London for a visit and that it was her last night and so he had stayed in to see her.

When he was arrested five months after John Lennon's murder he was quoted as having said, 'Why me? What have I done?'. However, it was said that he had confessed to some other prisoners whilst on remand at Bristol police station. It was said that he had demonstrated how he had killed John Lennon and that he had boasted about it. However, the man denied murdering John Lennon and was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter.
