Emma Winnall

Emma Winnall was attacked in her flat on 30 April 2013 and later died in hospital about a month later on 29 May 2013 from complications arising from her injuries.

She had been attacked in her own bed during the night and blood was spattered on the wall around her bed.

She had been put to bed earlier that night by her carer who locked her door after she left. The carer said that when she returned the next morning at 8.30am she heard Emma Winnall screaming and went in to find her in bed covered with blood.

She suffered from a broken arm, fractured skull and partially severed finger and had remained in intensive care since the attack.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of assault soon after, a 56-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, but they were both later released without charge.

The police said that there were no witnesses that had seen anything suspicious and no CCTV coverage of the area. They also said that there was no forensic evidence to assist their enquiry and that there was no secondary blood transfer found anywhere else in the flat.

They said that the motive was unknown and that nothing appeared to have been taken.

It was noted that there were no signs of a forced entry to her home although added that they were keeping an open mind as to whether or not that was the case. They said that anyone that would have entered her flat would have had to have had a key.

They said that they were able to talk to her before she died but said she had been in a confused state at the time.

However, they said that they had no suspects in the case.

She had worked in the Birmingham’s BSA munitions factory during the Second World War and had lost a number of friends when the factory was bombed.

She liked to play bingo and dominoes.
