Tom Brown

Age: 27

Sex: male

Date: 21 Aug 2004

Place: Southgate High Street, North London

Tom Brown was killed as he walked home from work along Southgate High Street.

He had been walking home early on Saturday morning, shortly after 3am on 21 August 2004, when he was stabbed to death. It was thought that he had been taken by surprise as he didn't have any defensive wounds on him and there were no signs of a struggle. He died at the scene. He was seen by a man in a car who then called and ambulance and waited until it arrived. However, the police didn't get to speak to him and didn't know who he was and made an appeal for him to come forward.

The police said that they ruled out murder as a motive as his mobile phone, wallet, cash and cards were all found still in his pockets.

The police said that they thought that his killer had chosen him at random although it was also thought that he might have been stabbed after intervening in an argument.

He had been out to a couple of pubs with some friends the night before, after which they had gone back to one of his friend's flats in Mayfair Terrace, Southgate which he later left at 3am. His journey home should have taken him about 20 minutes.

He had been wearing a blue zip-up top, beige jeans, black trainers and glasses.

During their investigation, the police said that several people reported having seen a man with a woman in the area and an e-fit was released of the man they wanted to trace. He was described as white, in his late 20s, with a slim build, short brown hair and a gaunt-looking face. He was described as scruffy and wearing a grey or beige hooded tracksuit top. The woman was said to have been about 5ft 4in tall, in her late twenties and slim with shoulder-length curly black hair and had a deep tan. She was said to have been wearing a three-quarter length leather coat.

The police said that they were interested in speaking to anyone that had been in the Chandos Court area between 3am and 4.15am or anyone that had seen him near the Crown Cars cab office.

They also said that they wanted to speak to a couple who were seen sitting on a wall about 10m from the spot where he was murdered, shortly after at 4am.

Tom Brown had worked as a librarian/archivist for the BBC. He was killed the day before his 28th birthday.
