Alexander Greig

Age: 29

Sex: male

Date: 20 Feb 1990

Place: Kensington High Street, Kensington, London

Alexander Greig was beaten to death outside a nightclub on 20 February 1990.

Three men were tried for his murder and manslaughter but acquitted at the Old Bailey on 28 November 1990.

Alexander Greig was a pipe fitter from Stockwell.

He and a friend had been to the Park Disco in Kensington High Street on 19 February 1990 and were thrown out in the early hours of 20 February when trouble erupted.

After they were thrown out they went to wait for a bus and whilst they were waiting, Alexander Greig's friend kicked the rear bumper of a new Honda car, after which the three men that were tried for murder got out of it. It was said that the first man hit Alexander Greig, even though it wasn't him that kicked the car, and knocked him to the ground and that after that the three men started to give Alexander Greig a savage kicking.

It was also said that one of the men then took a screwdriver from the boot of his car and chased Alexander Greig's friend up an alleyway and hit him in the back with it.

Alexander Greig's autopsy showed that he died from a brain haemorrhage. However, it was heard that whilst it could have been caused by the attack by the three men, it could also have been caused when he had been punched earlier in the evening.

Because it could not be determined who had delivered the fatal blow, the men were all acquitted, although one of them was convicted for assault occasioning actual bodily harm for the attack with the screwdriver on Alexander Greig's friend.

Alexander Greig was from Kirkcaldy in Scotland and had a daughter.
