Sheldon Bobb was found outside his home in Saxton Close, Lewisham suffering serious head injuries.
He was taken to Lewisham Hospital but died later that morning at 3am from internal bleeding and shock.
It was not known whether he had been attacked in the street where he was found or elsewhere and then dumped there. The police said they knew that he had been in his flat shortly before the incident.
The police also said that they had not ruled out a racist motive for his attack.
He had been a lifeguard at the Wavelengths Leisure Centre in Deptford.
