David Joslin

Age: 23

Sex: male

Date: 27 Dec 2009

Place: Old Church Road, Chingford

David Joslin died after being punched in Old Church Road whilst trying to break up a fight on 20 December 2009.

A man was tried for his manslaughter in June 2015 but acquitted.

David Joslin had just left a Christmas work party at about 1.30am on 20 December 2009 and had been walking home alone along Old Church Road when he saw a fight between two groups outside the jewellers Strictly Silver at 2 Old Church Road.

He then tried to break the fight up after seeing a man lying unconscious in the street but was punched and knocked over. When he fell he hit his head on the pavement and never regained consciousness. He was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone and then taken to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery where he died a week later on 27 December 2009.

The court heard that the fight between the two groups had started after someone had thrown some chips in the air. The two groups consisted of one from The Obelisk pub and another comprising of three men and a woman who had met up outside the jewellers and started rowing.

At an inquest into his death it was also heard that there had been failings at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone when they wrongly treated David Joslin as a drunk before he was later transferred to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

A man was initially charged with manslaughter in 2010 but the case was discontinued due to lack of evidence.

However, in October 2014 a 33-year-old man was charged with his manslaughter and tried at Southwark Crown Court on 16 June 2015 but acquitted. The man admitted to having been at the brawl but denied having hit David Joslin. It was heard that he had been wearing a cream jumper which it was said the man that hit David Joslin had been wearing, but his defence noted that CCTV evidence showed that a number of other people at the brawl had also had similar tops.

David Joslin was a Morrison's supermarket worker.
