Wati Suri was killed in a burglary at her home.
She was strangled at her home on 8 March 1983.
Four youths were convicted of her murder, however, they appealed and three of them were acquiited and their convictions quashed in 1985. However, the convition of the fourth youth was upheld on the grounds that he had confessed, although it was similarly quashed in 1994 after it was heard that his confession had been taken by a detective who evidence in three other cases had been found to be undermined and unreliable. The detective had been part of the West Midlands Police Serious Crime Squad which was disbanded following allegations og incompetence and abuse of power, that had resulted in wrongful convitions.
Wati Suri had lived in her son's house in North Drive, Handsworth.
It was said that she had been robbed, kicked, dragged from room to room, and strangled.
