Philip Gray was stabbed in Hoglands Park in Southampton whilst going out for a walk.
It was said that he was stabbed during a row over his attacker's barking terrier dog.
A 32-year-old man factory worker was tried for his murder in October 1997 but acquitted. The man claimed that he had acted in self-defence.
It was said that Philip Gray had shouted to a man, 'Keep that animal away from me', and that the man had shouted back, 'You stay away from my dog'.
They had then started fighting and the other man pulled out a pen-knife and stabbed Philip Gray three times in the chest and stomach.
The man that stabbed Philip Gray was then seen to run off towards a shopping centre.
Philip Gray had been a labourer and had lived alone nearby.
