Louise Tiffney

Age: 43

Sex: female

Date: 28 May 2002

Place: 2A Dean Path, Dean Village, Edinburgh

Louise Tiffney vanished from her home on 27 May 2002 after a row with her son.

Her son was tried for her murder but the case was found not proven. However, in November 2018 the prosecutors sought permission to retry him and in January 2020 they were granted permission to do so and his trial date was set for October 2021. However, her son didn't turn up for the trial and on 20 October 2021 an arrest warrant was issued for his arrest but two days later he committed suicide in Spain. It was said that he had been living in Germany at the time.

Blood matching her DNA was found in the boot of his Nissan Almera car. Police had also found small traces of leaves and flowers in the boot.

Louise Tiffney had lived in a flat with her son, aged 18 at the time and a daughter aged 6.

Her body was later found on 2 April 2016 by a cyclist off the A198, near Longniddry. The cyclist found her remains when he stopped to rest near the entrance to Gosford House. She was identified by dental records.

The police said that the area around Gosford House had been searched during the initial investigation but the exact place where she was found had not.

Police said that they thought that her killer had taken her to Gosford House and buried her in a shallow grave. However, they said that the estate was 60,000 acres and that it wasn't possible to search every inch of it.

In June 2002, the son was convicted of causing the deaths of two of his friends by dangerous driving in a car crash and was sent to a young offenders' institution for three years and nine months. At the murder trial, the prosecution said that he had quarrelled with Louise Tiffney whilst waiting to be sentenced and that he had then killed her and disposed of her body.
