David Oluwale

Age: 38

Sex: male

Date: 18 Apr 1969

Place: River Aire, Leeds, West Yorkshire

David Oluwale was found face down in the river Aire dead.

Two policemen were found not guilty of killing him on the grounds that witnesses could not state the people they saw with him were policemen. They were convicted of his assault though.

In March 2022 a bridge was built over the River Aire and named after him, the David Oluwale Bridge and in April 2022 a Blue Plaque placed near to the spot where he entered the water. However, the plaque was stolen within hours of it being unveiled and a replacement plaque put up afterwards was broken in half within a day. The police said that they were dealing with the incidents as hate crimes.
