Shane Marcus Thompson

Age: 19

Sex: male

Date: 30 Nov 1997

Place: Two in the Bush Pub, Norton Street, Radford

Shane Marcus Thompson was beaten to death by a group of men after being chased into the Two in the Bush pub in Radford in the early hours of 30 November 1997.

Shane Thompson had been with a group of friends from St Ann's and Radford when they clashed with a rival gang from The Meadows.

He was chased from a Kentucky Fried Chicken takeaway in Alfreton Street, across some back gardens, and into Norton Street where he was attacked at the Two in the Bush public house by the junction with Denman Street and knocked to the ground and beaten by a gang of between six and fifteen youths. They had attacked him with baseball bats and sticks.

He was taken to hospital where he was operated on to relieve pressure on his brain from a number of severe head wounds but died from heart failure.

Six people were tried for his murder but acquitted.

His cause of death was given as heart failure following a beating.

It was thought that the attack was connected to gang rivalry between Radford and The Meadows and the fight had started after a car was spat on.

It was said that the trial collapsed after the key prosecution witness failed in cross-examination to give positive identification evidence. The man had initially be charged with murder but had pleaded guilty to violent disorder and agreed to give evidence against his co-accused.

Soon after his death a man was shot at whilst getting out of his car in Colliery Street and it was thought to have been a revenge attack for Shane Thompson's murder.

Shane Thompson had been unemployed at the time.

The Two in the Bush public house has since been demolished and is now the site of some flats.
