It was heard that he had been selling drugs over a mobile phone in which he would take orders for drugs which would then be fulfilled by couriers on mountain bikes to the customers.
The police said that they thought that the shooting was related to a gangland feud. It was also reported that he had been shot folllowing a trivial row over a motorbike.

However, the charge against him was later dropped after two crucial witnesses failed to turn up to the committal hearing at the magistrates. The magistrate said, 'I have read the papers and without these girls the prosecution do not have a case'.
Nicky Murphy had also been known as Sailor and had previously been kidnapped and shot in the head three years earlier.
Three weeks after his murder his 25-year-old brother was shot in the same place in Quinney Crescent as he was paying his respects. He was shot in the shoulder but managed to run off across Princess Parkway.
