Nicky Murphy

Age: 26

Sex: male

Date: 21 Aug 1995

Place: Quinney Crescent, Moss Side, Manchester

Nicky Murphy was shot in Quinney Crescent, Alexandra Park Estate, Moss Side, on 21 August 1995 around 1am.

He had been with another man who was also shot in the leg but survived. A third man was also injured. They had been involved in selling crack cocaine. Residents heard the sound of cars racing and then two gunshots followed by five or six more in what was described as an exchange of gunfire.

Nicky Murphy had been shot twice in the head. He had been in Quinney Crescent at the junction with Rosegate Close.

It was heard that he had been selling drugs over a mobile phone in which he would take orders for drugs which would then be fulfilled by couriers on mountain bikes to the customers.

The police said that they thought that the shooting was related to a gangland feud. It was also reported that he had been shot folllowing a trivial row over a motorbike.

On 24 August 1995 it was reported that three people were arrested in connection with his murder whilst on 28 August 1995 it was reported that a 22-year-old was had been charged with his murder. However, the charge against him was later dropped after two crucial witnesses failed to turn up to the committal hearing at the magistrates. The magistrate said, 'I have read the papers and without these girls the prosecution do not have a case'.

Nicky Murphy had also been known as Sailor and had previously been kidnapped and shot in the head three years earlier.

Three weeks after his murder his 25-year-old brother was shot in the same place in Quinney Crescent as he was paying his respects. He was shot in the shoulder but managed to run off across Princess Parkway.
