Mark Jarrett was shot in the back of the head at a flat at 65 Palace Road, Anerley, south London that he had been using for drug dealing.

He was a cocaine and cannabis dealer.

His 30-year-old best friend was tried for his murder but acquitted.

Mark Jarrett's murder was described as an execution.

The man that was tried for Mark Jarrett's murder, who had lived in Essex Tower, Jasmine Grove, The Groves Estate, Penge, was said to have fled after Mark Jarrett was shot, having gone to an address in The Square, Caterham, Surrey. However, he said that he had gone into hiding because he thought that whoever had shot Mark Jarrett would be going after him next.

The man said, 'I was shocked and frightened. I didn't know what to think. I thought whoever killed Mark would come after me. I couldn't believe what had happened. I wanted the police to find Mark's killer, but I couldn't go to them because I was involved with people in criminal activity, drugs, and I'm not a grass. If I'd gone to the police, I couldn't have kept them out of it. A year ago I was stupid and reckless and a criminal but after I heard what happened to Mark I just wanted out'.

The man admitted that he would go and look after cannabis for Mark Jarrett.

He also admitted that he had obtained the gun that had been used to shoot Mark Jarrett. However, he said that he had acquired it at Mark Jarrett's request. He said, 'He just told me he wanted it for protection. I gave it to him that night and he dropped me off home. That was the last I saw of him'.

The man said that the following day he heard that Mark Jarrett had been shot and that thinking that the gunman would come after him next he went onto hiding. However, he was arrested a week later.
