Baby

Age: 1 day

Sex: male

Date: 2 Aug 1996

Place: River Thames, Wandsworth Reach

A dead baby was found in the River Thames at Wandsworth Reach having died from a fractured skull.

The child was white and was alive when it was thrown into the river. It was also naked and still had its umbilical cord attached.

It was pulled out of the river by a Fire Brigade boat near Wandsworth Reach.

It had a fractured skull which was thought to have been done to silence its cries.

The post-mortem stated that the child had died within 24 hours of being born.

The Coroner said:

'No person concerned with this death has been traced. A case like this always remains open, but frankly one cannot see how it can be advanced further.

The police said:

The likely scenario is that the mother gave birth to the child unassisted. It seems to me that he may well have been hit on the head. He may well have been put in some form of bag and disposed of in the Thames.
