Craig Eaton was shot twice in Molyneux Road, Kensington, Liverpool just after 11.15pm on 24 February 2004.

He had been walking home at the time after going out drinking with a colleague after a patient he worked with at a hospital had died. He had been with the colleague to a pub in Kensington after which he had taken a bottle of beer and started walking home towards Anfield. He was shot soon after in Molyneux Road near to Mallow Road.

He was found by residents bleeding on the pavement and an ambulance was called and he was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Merseyside Police said that they thought that his shooting might have been a case of mistaken identity. They suggested that his killer had followed him from a pub and had waited until they were both alone and then shot him in a gangland hit gone wrong.

The man was said to have followed Craig Eaton and then when beside him, to have shot him twice in the side. 

The gun flashes were seen by a witness in a car who tried to chase the gunman, but he vanished after running into Mallow Road.

The gunman was described as:

  • White.
  • Male.
  • About 5ft 6in tall.
  • Stocky build with broad shoulders.
  • Wearing a blue Lacoste track suit.

Craig Eaton had been wearing a black cardigan over a light blue shirt and black trousers with black shoes.

He was said to have got on a 26 Arriva bus on Belmont Road and travelled to Sheil Road in Kensington, sitting near the front, getting off on Sheil Road just before the junction with Molyneux Road between 11.05pm and 11.15pm.

Two cars were also seen in the area. The first was a dark green Ford Mondeo car with a registration number Y723 RJA and the second car was a silver or light-blue Volvo 740 GL saloon with the registration number G690 NFR.

Craig Eaton worked at the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool. The police said that he was not linked to any form of criminal activity.
