Abdul Musavir

Age: 31

Sex: male

Date: 10 Aug 2011

Place: Dudley Road, Winson Green, Birmingham

Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul Musavir were hit by a car during riots in Birmingham in the early hours of 10 August 2011.

They had been stood in the street when a car drove at them, hitting them and sending them flying three metres in to the air. They were taken to hospital where they all later died from their injuries.

In 2012 eight men were tried for their murder but acquitted. It was said that they had conspired to drive three vehicles along the street, one on the pavement to force people out onto the street and the other two to then run them over when they went onto the street. However, they were all cleared.

Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul Musavir's families maintained that their deaths were unlawful and requested that a full investigation into the police investigation was carried out, referring to their deaths as murders.

They had been hit by a Mazda car that was driven by one of the men tried. The other two cars involved were said to have been a Ford Fiesta and an Audi. The man driving the Mazda car said that he had not intended to knock down, kill or seriously harm any member of the crowd.

The judge said 'On any view this has been a terrible case, a tragic and pointless loss of three young lives. However, by their verdicts the jury have decided that this was not a deliberate killing, that there was no plan to kill these three young men. The jury have decided that this was a terrible accident'.

It was also heard that one of the policemen involved in the investigation had lied under oath. It was said that he had invented an account given on oath about why defence barristers had not been told of offers of immunity to eyewitnesses until mid-way through the trial.

This case is technically not unsolved, but the parents seem to still consider the deaths unlawful and so its included here.
