Glenda Chambers

Age: 70

Sex: female

Date: 14 Dec 2001

Place: Onley Road, Walworth, London

Glenda Chambers died in a fire at her home.

A 33-year-old man was tried for her murder but acquitted.

Glenda Chambers suffered from burns and smoke inhalation and died a week later in hospital. She had lived in a maisonette.

One of Glenda Chambers's daughters was found outside after having jumped from a balcony and another relative, a nephew managed to escape.

It was said that the man, who had been in a relationship with two of Glenda Chambers's daughters over a four-year period, had started the fire after a row over him cheating with the daughters came to a head.

However, the man, who was a taxi-driver, said that at the time he had been driving along the M1 near Bedford saying that he had had a fare from London to go to a village in Bedford but said that he couldn't remember the name of the village. He said that he had never been out of London before and didn't know how far the destination was. The court also heard that the evidence against him was all circumstantial and that there were no witnesses or any scientific evidence.

Glenda Chambers and the man had met five years earlier. The man and Glenda Chambers's 23-year-old daughter were both church goers. The 23-year-old daughter had wanted to get married but the man didn't want to. However, later, the man began seeing Glenda Chambers's younger 19-year-old daughter who then moved in with him and had his child. However, after five months they split up and the man later fell out with the whole family.

The court heard that Glenda Chambers didn't like the fact that the man was seeing both of her daughters.

The day after the fire the man returned to his native Uganda. However, he returned a month later and was arrested at Heathrow Airport.
