Joseph Cohen

Age: 88

Sex: male

Date: 20 Jun 2003

Place: Rosedale House, Manor Road, Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington

Joseph Cohen was stabbed to death in his flat at Rosedale House, Manor Road, Stamford.

Police forced their way into his flat on 20 June 2003 and found him dead. He had been stabbed over 20 times and it was thought that he had been dead for a couple of days.  He was found in a pool of blood on the floor in his bedroom, fully dressed.

They had been called after a neighbour said that she had not seen him for some time.

The police later said that they thought that he might have been murdered by a psychopath who got thrills from killing. They said that they had ruled out the idea that it had been a random attack and added that he would have known and trusted his killer. They said that his killer probably won his trust over a period of time. They said that there was no sign of him being robbed and that no money had at any time gone missing from his account.

There were no signs of his house having been broken into and his family said that he would never have opened the door to a stranger.

Joseph Cohen was last seen on CCTV on 12 June 2003 paying a bill at the post office in Stoke Newington High Street.

When the police investigated his background, they found that he often went into Central London to visit cafes around Blenheim Street and visit department stores in the West End. He was said to have enjoyed meeting people and that he would often use a false name such as Tony, Martin or Jack Conway and lie about his age saying he was younger, until he knew people better.

The police said that two people had been seen near his front door a few days before he was found dead, and said that they wanted to trace them.

It was also noted that he had been friendly with two women. One a doctor thought to be from the Turkish community and the other a white woman aged between 35-38 years, 5ft 3in tall and with dark collar length black hair. The police said that they were interested in tracing both of them.

The police said that they thought that a woman might have been staying at his flat around the time he was murdered and that she could have been one of the two women seen by other witnesses and that they were keen to trace her.

The police also said that they were keen to trace anyone else that had known him.

Joseph Cohen lived alone at his flat in Rosedale House where he had been for over 40 years. He was noted as being a Second World War veteran having been in the RAF and having seen action in Italy. His wife had died 18 years earlier.
