Jill Jenkin

Age: 57

Sex: female

Date: 26 Feb 2001

Place: Sydenham Road, Catford, London

Jill Jenkin was run over by a man in a stolen Nissan Bluebird car on 8 February 2001. She was taken to hospital where she went into a coma and died on 28 February 2001.

She died from broncho-pneumonia brought on by her serious head injuries.

She had been crossing the road at the time, and wearing her slippers.

After hitting her the car had hit another car and then raced away.

A man that had been crossing the road just in front of her said that he heard a thud and that when he turned he saw Jill Jenkin rolling off the bonnet of the car. He said, 'When I stepped off the pavement I knew there was an old lady walking behind. I then heard a thud and saw the old lady rolling off the bonnet'.

He said that he then saw the Nissan Bluebird car do a U-turn and then drive off. He said that he thought that the driver was a white man in his late 30s and said that he had looked stunned.

However, another man that saw the Nissan Bluebird car said that he thought that the driver was black. He said that he saw it hit a Nissan Micra car as it swerved to avoid a bus.

The driver of the Nissan Micra car said that he saw the crash and made a note of the Nissan Bluebird car number plate.

The car was later traced to a second-hand car dealer in Leas Green, Chislehurst who said that it was an old banger and only worth £50 and that when it was stolen on 29 January 2001 from Sidcup Place he had not been too concerned. He said that he had bought it in a part exchange. He said that he didn't know who had been driving it and when asked if might have been one of his sons he said that they would have had the choice of plenty of other cars to have driven if required.

The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, but noted that the inquest could be reopened if the police uncovered any new evidence.
