Sex: male

Date: 28 Jul 2001

Place: Inverness Terrace, Bayswater, London

Makram Abdul-Kadir died in a fire. He had been sleeping rough in a car that someone set on fire in Inverness Terrace, Bayswater.

A 57-year-old man was tried for his murder but acquitted. He had denied starting the fire and it was noted that the evidence against him was circumstantial.

Makram Abdul-Kadir had been sleeping in an abandoned car in an underground car park in Inverness Terrace, Bayswater in July 2001. Firemen were called after black smoke was seen coming out of the garages and when they extinguished the flames they found the body of Makram Abdul-Kadir lying on the back seat.

His post-mortem stated that his cause of death was smoke inhalation.

The man that was charged with his murder was also homeless and denied murder and arson. He was found near the scene when the firemen arrived and was seen to be mumbling incoherently. When he was questioned he refused to answer any questions.

It was thought that Makram Abdul-Kadir had been asleep in the car when it was set on fire. He had had 308mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system which equated to being about three times over the drink drive limit.

Fire investigators said that the fire had started in the front seat and said that they thought that it was unlikely that Makram Abdul-Kadir had started it by falling asleep with a lit cigarette.

Makram Abdul-Kadir was homeless and was a Somalian national. It was said that very little was known about him, including his age, when he had come to the UK or whether he had any family in the country.
