Abdul Mahroof

Age: 58

Sex: male

Date: 7 Nov 2001

Place: Crispian Close, Neasden

Abdul Mahroof was found hanging from his second-floor window in 1994 and was left paralysed. He died 8 years later from aspiration due to pneumonia on 7 November 2001.

Abdul Mahroof was found hanging from the second-floor window of his flat. A neighbour and emergency services loosened the knot in the rope and he was lowered to the ground. When he was lowered he was found to have a cigarette clamped in his mouth which had to be pried out before resuscitation could be carried out.

He was taken to hospital where he was declared a tetraplegic and could only move his eyes. Six months later he was moved to Walm Lane Nursing Home in Willesden where he remained for 8 years when he died of aspiration due to pneumonia.

Abdul Mahroof had lived with a lodger who was seen running off from the flat and was never seen again. It was also noted that £9,000 was missing from his flat.

Shortly before he was found hanging, a man called his daughter and told her that she would never see her father again. She said that she didn't recognise the voice but said that it wasn't her father's. She said that she then called her mother and they both rushed round to Abdul Mahroof's flat where they found him hanging.

At his inquest, the Coroner criticised the police for not investigating the matter at the time or launching a murder inquiry noting that the only information he had from the police about Abdul Mahroof's death was from the notes of a policewoman that had been called out to the scene. The Coroner noted that millions of pounds had been spent investigating the murder of Stephen Lawrence but in the case of Abdul Mahroof where his daughter had received a call a few hours before he was found hanging, where £9,000 had gone missing and where a lodger was seen running from the scene never to be seen again, all the police could present to the inquest were the notes from the policewoman's pocket book.

The lodger was not identified and was never heard from again.
