Brinley Booth was beaten over the head whilst investigating a burglary at a cinema and died.
The burglars had stolen a safe that they were taking away down the street in a puchchair. It was thought he was hit on the head with a jemmy.
There was not enough evidence to charge the main suspect, even when he confessed 10 years later. However, he was a US army deserter and was later sentenced to 12 years in the US after he was arrested when his charges were dismissed by the magistrate.
