Nicola Ray disappeared whilst on her way home after a night out.
She had been out for the night with friends in Basildon, drinking at the Moon on the Square pub, and had gone back to a friend’s house in Devlins, Felmores, afterwards. After leaving her friend’s house in the early hours of the morning she was never seen again.
When her home was searched the police found that some of her clothes were missing.
It was noted that no suicide note was found.
Her fiancee was first arrested in relation to her murder in 2001 but released and then later arrested in February 2010 and held on bail until he was again released without charge in November 2010.
When the fiancee was arrested in 2010 the police carried out a large dig at his house in Voysey Gardens in which he still lived in and where had lived with Nicola Ray at the time she disappeared. They dug up both the garden and the garage, carrying out x-ray scans beforehand.
Nicola Ray had two children. She and her fiancee were due to get married in August 2000.
