Ravindra Mhatre was shot after being kidnapped outside his home in Bartley Green, Birmingham.

Two men were convicted for his murder in 1984, but the gunman was never traced. A third man was tried in November 2005 but acquitted.

Ravindra Mhatre's body was later found outside Red Hill Farm in Hinckley. He had been shot in the neck, chest and head.

Ravindra Mhatre had been an Indian diplomat and had worked at the Indian High Commission in New Street, Birmingham. He was described as having lived in a modest.

The third man tried had been a member of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front and was alleged to have carried out the murder for political purposes.  He was identified by his fingerprints.

Ravindra Mhatre was described as having lived in a modest home in Bartley Green and to have taken the bus too and from his place of work each day.

However, he was kidnapped near his home on 3 February 1984 and taken to a house in Alum Rock, Birmingham where he was held for two days. A ransom note was then sent to news agencies demanding demanding that the Iindian autorities pay a £1m ransom and release a man in the Kashmiri independence movement who had been sentenced to death.

However, on 5 February 1984 he was taken to a remote spot near Sapcote in Leicestershire and shot three times.
