Eric Ayo Akinniranye

Age: 25

Sex: male

Date: 3 Jul 2004

Place: Vicarage Grove, Camberwell, South London

Eric Ayo Akinniranye was shot.

A man was charged with his murder but his trial at the Old Bailey was discontinued and he was acquitted.

He had been chased along Camberwell High Street at about 7pm on his motorcycle by two men in hooded tops driving a dark ML 270 Mercedes four-wheel drive car and after they knocked him over they chased him into Vicarage Grove where they shot him multiple times at 7.10pm. It was thought that the gunmen were black.

They had fired a number of shots at him and then when he was on the ground they had fired a number of other shots at him at point blank range into his neck and chest.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

The Mercedes car, registration GL04 YDA, that was thought to have been used in the murder was later found in Lyndhurst Grove, Peckham.

The street was said to have been quite busy at the time and two buses had stopped near his body which was seen by the passengers on board.

He had just been released from prison where he had been serving a 10-year sentence for drugs and firearms offences. He had been released from Coldingley prison, near Woking three years into his sentence to carry out a four-week placement working with disabled people in Cambridge. It was heard that he had been making good progress in prison and with his drug addictions and was seen as an ideal candidate for the prison's resettlement programme. The programme had involved him living nearby and working in a plant nursery and that it was a breach of his licence to have gone to south London.

Scotland Yard said that they had not been told that he was being released, saying that he was a dangerous person and noted that his execution reflected that. The police said that it was clear that he was targeted and that it was a deliberate shooting and that it was clear that the gunmen had no intention that he should walk away from it.

A witness said 'I saw a man with a hood over his head getting out of a car. He had a gun and fired three bullets into the body of the man and fired one shot into the air. Two buses stopped right in front of it. The passengers were shocked.'.

The police also said that they thought his murder had been part of an ongoing battle between drug dealers. It was thought that his killers had been tipped off that he was due to visit the area and that they had been waiting and looking out for him. They said that they had found CCTV evidence that indicated that they had been looking for him and that it was set up.

Eric Akinniranye was a Nigerian.
