Yasser Nazir

Age: 16

Sex: male

Date: 5 Sep 2001

Place: Haworth Road, Chellow Heights, Bradford

Yasser Nazir was shot twice in the head in Haworth Road in what was said to have been an execution-style shooting relating to an earlier assault.

He had been sitting in a white Vauxhall Astra car on the forecourt of a Shell petrol station in Haworth Road, Bradford, with two other friends on 5 September 2001 when a green Honda Accord car pulled up and a passenger in the car shot Yasser Nazir with a long-barrelled shotgun. Yasser Nazir then managed to drive about 100 yards up the road before he collapsed and died. The green Honda Accord car had followed him and when it caught up the passenger shot Yasser Nazir again. His two friends then ran off.

After the shooting the green Honda Accord car did a U-turn and sped off towards Toller Lane.

He had been driving the white Vauxhall Astra car illegally and had earlier attended a police station in Bradford in relation to an earlier assault in which some people were ambushed and attacked with hammers, axes and knives.

Shortly before Yasser Nazir pulled into the petrol station after leaving the police station a red Mercedes-Benz car that had been in front of his had started to swerve across the road after which Yasser Nazir pulled into the petrol station and then the green Honda Accord car pulled up and he was shot.

It was thought that the shooting was gang related and had been a tit-for-tat attack in revenge for an assault a month earlier in the summer of 2001 on a senior gang member in which a man was injured.

On the day of his murder, Yasser Nazir and his two friends had been to the police station to attend some identity parades. However, Yasser Nazir had refused to take part in the identity parades but had driven his two friends there. However, when they arrived his two other friends also refused to take part in the identification parades and they all left together. It was thought then that the people involved in the incident who had been at the police station had called other people on their mobile phones to say that Yasser Nazir was at the police station and that Yasser Nazir had then been followed by some people in cars. His brother was later convicted of conspiracy to murder in 2003 for the earlier incident for which Yasser Nazir and his friends had gone to the police station about.

The green Honda Accord car was later found burned out, but the gun was never found.

Ten people were arrested in relation to the shooting, but no one was charged due to a lack of evidence.

Yasser Nazir was said to have been a drug dealer.

His brother had said that he thought that it had been a case of mistaken identity.

Yasser Nazir had lived in Chatsworth Street, Keighley.
