Joseph Cummins

Joseph Cummins was shot outside his grandmother’s place in Longmoor Lane, Fazakerley where he lived at 9pm on 20 January 2011.

He was taken to hospital where he later died.

He had been shot in the back.

At the time there had been a unusually dense fog and the murder became known as the Murder in the Mist.

He was shot three times as he was getting into his friends Delta cab. After being shot he staggered along to a car sales shop further down Longmoor Lane where he collapsed and was found by police that had been going along the street.

Witnesses said that they had heard five shots. It was thought that his killer or killers had gotten away in a car. The police said that they thought that there had been more than one person involved in the attack.

CCTV footage was examined but the fog had obscured most of the scenes. However, in 2014 footage was released that showed a person walking past Fazakerley Car Sales towards Kirkby who police said they were interested in speaking to.

Other CCTV footage was also found that showed two people walking along Longmoor Lane, and the police said that they were interested in speaking to them in case they saw something that might help with the inquiry.

Joseph Cummins had previously been shot a few hundred yards away in Gribble Road in 2009. On that occasion he had been shot in the back and buttocks and had taken himself to the hospital. No one was charged for that shooting.

He also had convictions for drug dealing and assault. He had had a pacemaker fitted for a heart condition that was shared by other members of his family.

Five people were arrested for his murder but no one was charged.

The police said that they thought that it was a gangland execution and that it might have involved drug dealing.
