On the night of 9 January 1903 they were seen drinking together and later going towards the Avon Bridge but the woman hesitated to cross and the man urged her on. A few minutes later the man was seen rushing about the bridge with his coat and waistcoat off saying that the woman had jumped into the river and that he had jumped in after her to save her but the river was in flood. However, he was not wet above the knees and his statements were contradictory. However, there wasn't enough evidence against him and he was discharged.
