Duncan Charles Frame was attacked outside the Cutty Sark pub in Thamesmead.
He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich but found to be dead on arrival.
There had been a mass brawl that had left several people injured. The police were called out at 11.30pm and when they arrived they found Duncan Frame unconscious.
The police said that the violence might have been caused between rival Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur football fans who had been drinking at the pub. The pub had been holding a charity event at the time that Duncan Frame had helped organise.
Twenty one people were arrested in relation to the incident but there are no known charges, trials or convictions.
His post mortem stated that he had died from heart failure and head injuries.
Duncan Frame was unemployed. He weighed 30 stone and was called Big Duncan.
