Bill Chivers died after being mugged.
He was attacked after leaving the Swffryd Community Centre where he had been playing bingo on 15 September 2001. He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport where he died six weeks later. He suffered from hip, pelvis and arm injuries during the attack and later developed complications and died.
A 15-year-old teenager was tried for his murder but was acquitted. It was said that he had mugged Bill Chivers for a portion of pie and peas that he had bought. He denied the murder and said that he was at his nan's house for the whole time.
