Mohammed Akram was shot in the head.
He was found dead in some woods near Ackers Lane in Carrington.
His body was found by a cyclist at about 8am on Monday 11 November 1996.
His car was then found about an hour later a mile away in Bromley Avenue, Flixton. It was a light blue Toyota Corolla and still had the keys in its ignition.
Although the motive was not known, it was thought it wasn't robbery.
His post mortem examination gave his cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the head. He had been shot dead at point blank range with a shotgun.
At the time of the murder, four men were seen near the scene of the murder, but they were all identified by the police and ruled out of the enquiry.
It was noted that there had been a CCTV camera at a nearby airport car parking site near a field off Isherwood Road, Carrington that would have recorded some of what occurred that night but that there had been a fog and nothing of value was recorded.
It was thought that his car had been dumped before he was shot.
Mohammed Akram had been a taxi-driver and had had five children.
