A woman was attacked off London Road, Liverpool on the night of 4 June 1904. She was taken to the Liverpool Workhouse Hospital where she died on 12 June 1904.
She was seen being kicked by a man.
Her identity was unknown. However, it was noted that although every effort had been made by the Liverpool police to identify her throughout the country, the matter was rather singular because there were certain marks on her that would have assisted towards her identification.
She was described as middle aged.
An inquest on Thursday 30 June 1904 returned a verdict of murder against a person unknown.
Screams were heard from the place and she was seen being violently kicked by an unknown person off London Road and when she was picked up she was unconscious. She had succumbed to shocking injuries to her head and face.
The man escaped.
A married woman that had lived in Canterbury Street stated that on the night of Saturday, 4 June 1904 that she had been in her home when she had heard screaming in the entry to the rear of her house. She said that when she looked through one of the back windows that she saw the woman lying on the ground, huddled up and motionless with a man standing close by. She said that she saw the man kick the woman twice about the head and face and then turn to go away, but said that he then returned and kicked her again about the face.
She said that she then drew her husband's attention to what was going on and that he then went out into the entry. She said that the man then made a further attempt to kick the woman but said that she screamed and the man ran away in the direction of Bidder Street.
The woman's husband said that he saw the man kick the woman and that he then followed the man into Bidder Street, but couldn't see him anywhere about. He said that he then returned to the woman who he found to be bleeding profusely.
The doctor at the Workhouse Hospital gave the woman's cause of death as concussion of the brain following upon the terrible injuries received about the head and face, noting that the injuries were very likely caused by kicks.
The whole area around Canterbury Street and Bidder Street has since been redeveloped.
