Edith Wall

Age: 7

Sex: female

Date: 1 Mar 1906

Place: New Tredegar, Rhymney Valley

Edith Wall was found on the mountain side near New Tredegar.

Two hairs on her body were found that were dissimilar to her own.

The man who found her body said that notwithstanding the rough night, her clothing was dry when he found her. He said that she was lying on her side and that her hat was on her face.

When a policeman arrived, he said that her clothes were not disarranged.

The doctor said that the death must have taken place at around 5am that morning, three or four hours before she was found. He said that there was undoubted evidence of an outrage having been committed. He also said that the post mortem revealed the first signs of acute pneumonia. He said that if Edith Wall had not been criminally assaulted and left on the mountain, she would probably have lived longer.

The coroner suggested that her death might have been due to exposure.

At the inquest, a man gave evidence that he had heard a man and a woman talking together on 28 February 1906, and heard the woman say to the man that she had seen a certain person, that she named, trying to drop a little girl under a bridge leading to the spot where Edith Wall's body was found. He said that the woman said that she shouted to the man to leave the girl alone, but that was all he overheard. He said he had also given a description of the woman to the police.

A man who was suspected of killing her was detained, but he denied killing her, saying, 'I know nothing about it. I never outraged anyone'. The hairs were not similar to his and his clothing had no stains on them. At the inquest, the Coroner pointed out that there was no evidence against him. After the inquest, a special sitting of the Tredegar magistrates was held and the man was discharged after no evidence was offered against him.

The Coroner's jury returned a verdict of 'Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown'.
