Man

Age: 22

Sex: male

Date: 18 Aug 1904

Place: Brayford Pool, Brayford, Lincoln

A man was found drowned in Brayford Pool.

His hands and feet had been bound with black mohair lace.

His body was found by a Corporation employee as he was dredging from a lighter in Brayford. He said that when he first saw the body he thought it was a cat or a dog but then saw that it was a man's head with the rest of the body floating downwards in about five feet of water.

His wrists were tied together and his legs were bound just above the boot tops.

It was thought that the man had struggled a great deal once in the water as the bindings on his wrists had cut deeply into his flesh.

In his waistcoat pocket a numbered ticket was found issued at Cleethorpes for either a concert or a pier. A metal watch was also found that had something scratched into the inner case that looked like it had been done with a pin or a needle which appeared to say C. Wheeldon, however, it was not very decipherable.

The post-mortem showed that his death had been due to drowning and that he had been in the water for at least ten days.

There were no other marks of violence on his body other than the marks left by the laces on his wrists and legs.
