Alan Sheard was attacked on Leeds Road, Thornbury and later died in Leeds General Infirmary the following day.

He was walking along the Leeds Road after drinking in local pubs on the Sunday night at 7pm when he got into an argument with a group of Asian youths, one of whom then assaulted him.

A witness said that they saw Alan Sheard assaulted and then fall off of the kerb and hit his head on the ground.

Another man said 'A punch was thrown and straight away you could tell he was knocked out because he had been drinking. It was like when you are chopping a tree down, he just went straight backwards.'.

There were said to have been four Asian youths, three in their late teens and one about 14-years-old. One of the men was said to have had a full beard.

Another witness said that Alan Sheard had been shouting racial abuse at the youths.

Afterwards they ran off up Thornbury Avenue.

Police arrested two youths aged 19 and 23 but no one was charged.
