A child was found in a cardboard boot box in a back lane.

A string was tied around its neck and death was by strangulation. Several feet of edging had also been tied tightly around its neck.

Its face was covered with what appeared to be starch or flour paste.

A boy had found the box which was wrapped in brown paper in the mud in the gutter.
