Edward Borer

Edward Borer was run over and dragged some distance by a green car.

It was said that the car that hit him was not going at an excessive speed but that after knocking him over the driver just drove away. The incident was witnessed by a number of people. A man that had been walking with Edward Borer at the time however, said that the car was going 'terribly fast'.

Another witness said that Edward Borer was caught by the car because he changed his mind and stepped backwards as he was about to go on the footpath.

A woman who had seen the accident said that she had a faint recollection of seeing LN 301 or LN 201.

Another man who saw the accident said that there was only one person in the car, that it was green and the numberplate was LN 2011.

A Sergeant said that he saw the chauffeur who told him that he had returned home by 11.30pm and knew nothing about the accident and denied having been in Godstone Road and accounted for the damage to his car by saying that he had collided with a chain.

A night watchman said that later on the Saturday night at 12.40am he heard a crack and when he ran up he saw the chauffeur trying to back his car from a chain entanglement. He said the chauffeur appeared to have been drinking  and he demanded his name and address and the number of his car which was LN 2011. The chauffeur said that he had lost his way. At the time the road was closed to traffic and there were lanterns to warn drivers and pedestrians.

The owner of the car said that his chauffeur had failed to pick him up that night at 11.30pm and he had walked home and later found the chauffeur in the garage quite sober. He said that the chauffeur told him that he had run into a chain which had twisted a lamp bracket. There was no blood on the car which was travel stained and had not been washed or cleaned.

The chauffeur was arrested and charged with manslaughter but the Coroner's jury agreed that the evidence against him wasn't sufficient.
