Place: Tunbridge Wells Common

A newly born child was found wrapped up in a parcel on the Common in Tunbridge Wells.

It was discovered on the common opposite the Carlton Hotel lying in the furze.

When the child's body was examined it appeared that it had had its throat cut by some sharp instrument.

Nearby a pocket handkerchief was found with the letter 'L' written in black on the corner.

At the inquest it was heard that the body had been quite fresh and showed no signs of decomposition. The doctor said that it appeared that the child had been murdered by someone soon after birth.

The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.
