A newly born female child was found wrapped up in a towel and placed in the parapet of the Grand Parade in Bath.

A man who lived at North Parade Buildings said that he was walking along on the Sunday morning when he saw the parcel, and when he found the remains of a child inside he fetched a policeman. He said that he didn’t think the parcel would have been noticed unless someone looked over the balustrade.

When the police arrived, they found the female child wrapped up in a towel and brown paper.

The post mortem revealed that the child was a new born and could not have been dead for more than two or three days. It stated that the child had had a separate existence but had not been properly attended and had probably only lived a short time.

The cause of death was determined to have been suffocation based on the fact that the head and face were very blue and on it being tightly wrapped up. The right side of the face had been flattened by pressure as though it had been packed away in a box.

The child had otherwise been strong and healthy and weighed 6.5lbs.
